I've seen lots of coffee tables in my day. I've spent a lot of time in hotel rooms during long flights. The ones that have always made the most sense to me are those that haven't been designed so much as they've been built by someone who was thinking about multi-functional furnishings. They're usually made out of wood and have a variety of compartments you can use to hold your things (such as bottles, glasses of water, or books). You could probably also build one yourself using an old desk as a base and some lumber.
